Ambrose Alli University (AAU) was established in 1981 by the then governor of Bendel State, Professor Ambrose Folorunso Alli. The university was initially named Bendel State University and it was the first state owned university in Nigeria. After the creation of Edo State in 1991, the name of the university was changed to Ambrose Alli University in honour of its founder.
The university started with five faculties: Arts, Education, Science, Social Sciences and Law. Over the years, new faculties have been added to increase its academic offering. These include College of Medicine (now Faculty of Clinical Sciences), Environmental Studies and Agriculture as well as Engineering and Technology. Now AAU has a total of twelve faculties offering over fifty-five undergraduate programmes and thirty postgraduate programmes.
Since its establishment, AAU has made significant contributions to research and knowledge production in Nigeria. It has produced many notable alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their respective fields such as Professor Osato Giwa-Osagie who served as Minister for Health under President Obasanjo’s administration; Justice Kate Abiri who is a Judge of the Federal High Court; Professor Julius Ihonvbere who is currently a lawmaker representing Owan Federal Constituency; Dr Christopher Kolade who served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to United Kingdom; and Senator Daisy Danjuma who is currently a Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District.
Degrees and Programs
Ambrose Alli University offers a variety of departments and degrees for students to choose from. The Faculty of Arts, Management Sciences, Education and Social Sciences offer a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The Faculty of Arts offers courses such as English, History, Philosophy, Religion and International Studies. The Faculty of Management Sciences provides courses such as Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration and Economics. The Faculty of Education provides courses such as Adult Education, Curriculum Studies and Educational Management. The Faculty of Social Sciences offers courses such as Political Science, Geography and Sociology.
The university also has several professional schools offering specialized programmes in Law, Medicine & Surgery and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. The School of Law provides courses in Civil Procedure Law, Criminal Law and International Law while the School of Medicine & Surgery offers specializations in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics among others. According to Webometrics, Ambrose Alli University ranks 8th in Nigeria and 906th in Africa. It also ranks 3rd in Edo State and 1st among all state universities in Edo State. In addition, it has been ranked 4th among all Nigerian universities for research productivity by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Furthermore, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020, Ambrose Alli University was ranked 7th among the top 10 universities in Nigeria. It was also ranked 1st among all state universities nationwide and 2nd overall behind Covenant University.
In terms of international rankings, Ambrose Alli University has been featured on some global rankings such as the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings where it was ranked 551-600 amongst other top institutions globally. Admissions Requirements
The admissions requirements for Ambrose Alli University are fairly straightforward. The university requires all applicants to have a minimum of five (5) credits in relevant subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent. These credits must include English Language, Mathematics, and any three (3) other subjects from the approved list of subjects by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). In addition to these five credits, applicants must also possess a minimum score of 180 in JAMB’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In order to gain admission into Ambrose Alli University, applicants must also meet certain additional criteria. These criteria include having a good moral character; being medically fit; showing proof of payment of the prescribed fees; and providing certified copies of their O’ Level results.
