National University of Austral Patagonia. Public university of Argentina with headquarters in the city of Río Gallegos, province of Santa Cruz. Formed from the resizing of the National University of the South and has more than 6,000 students.
Historical review
In 1962, the first Center for Higher Studies attached to the National University of the South was established, which became the first institutional precedent for higher level university education in the region.
This center, which later gave rise to the Santa Cruz University Institute, together with a series of non-university Tertiary Study Centers, formed the basis for the creation of the Federal University of Austral Patagonia, which since 1991 has operated under the regime of provincial universities. The effective transfer to national jurisdiction took place in January 1996.
Since 1987, the Institutions that pre-existed the University have proposed to organize Higher Education in Southern Patagonia. This regional vocation allowed the newly created Province of Tierra del Fuego to formalize its participation in the project in 1989, through a Treaty signed by the Governors of the provinces, with the prospect that the Academic Units would function in four Santacruceñas localities and in Land of Fire.
Creation of the university
The National University of Austral Patagonia was created by National Law No. 24,446, sanctioned on December 23, 1994 and promulgated on January 11, 1995.
College goal
The main objective of the university is to respond to the regional demands for higher education, not only for professional training but fundamentally for the production of scientific and technological knowledge.
